FREDERIC RZEWSKI: Rodjen 1938. u Westfield, Massachusetts, Rzewski je studirao sa Charled Mackey, Walter Piston, Roger Sessions, Milton Babbitt, i Luigi Dallapiccola. Njegovo prijateljstvo sa Christina Wolff, David Behrman, kao i poznanstvo sa John Cage i David Tudor, su ostavili snazan uticaj na razvoj njegove kompozicije iI izvodjenja. Zajedno sa Alvin Curran i Richard Teitelbaum, osnovao je MEV (Muzika Elektronska Uzivo) grupu, poznatu kao pionir uzivo izvodjenja electonics i improvizacije. Njegova najcuvenija kompozicija je “Ujedinjeni narodi se nikad nece pokoriti”, narucena od strane pijanistice Ursule Oppens, a inspirisane pjesmom sa cileanskih mirnodopskih demonstracija “El pueblo unido jamás será vencido!". Od 1983. godine, profesor je kompozicije na Conservatoire Royal de Musique in Liege, Belgija.

Born in 1938. u Westfield, Massachusetts, Rzewski studied with Charles Mackey, Walter Piston, Roger Sessions, Milton Babbitt, and Luigi Dallapiccola. His friendship with Christian Wolff, David Behrman, as well as acquaintance with John Cage and David Tudor, strongly influenced his development in both composition and performance. Together with Alvin Curran and Richard Teitelbaum he formed MEV (Musica Elettronica Viva) group, known for its pioneering work in live electronics and improvisation. His the most acclaimed composition is “The People United Will Never Be Defeated”, commissioned by pianist Ursula Oppens, and inspired by Chilean song from peace demonstrations “El pueblo unido jamás será vencido!". Since 1983, he has been Professor of Composition at the Conservatoire Royal de Musique in Liege, Belgium.

URSULA OPPENS: Rodjena Njujorcanka, Ursula Oppens je zapocela svoje prve casove klavira sa svojom mamom, Edith Oppens, i nastavila sa Leonard Shure i Guido Agosti. Na Radcliffe College je studirala englesku literature i ekonomiju, te postdiplomirala na Juilliard School, gdje je studirala sa Rosina Lhevinne i Felix Galimir. 1970. je imala svoj prvi New York debut, i te iste godine osvojila prvu nagradu na Busoni Internacionalnom takmicenju za klavir. Dobitnik je 1976 Avery Fisher Career Grant, sto je vodilo ka debut sa Filharmonijom u Njujorku. Tokom njene karijere, istrajna predanost integraciji nove muzike u vise tradicionalni koncertni program je vodilo gdjcu Oppens narudzbama i premijerama mnogih novih kompozicija. Medju njima su djela Anthony Davis, Elliott Carter, John Harbison, Tania Leon, Gyorgy Ligeti, Witold Lutoslawski, Tobias Picker, Frederic Rzewski, Lois Vierk, i Charles Quorinen. Osnivac je Speculum Musicae, izvodjacke grupe, koja je pionir nove muzike od 1971. godine. Gdjca Oppens je dobila Grammy nominaciju za oba snimka Rzewskog “Ujedinjeni narodi se nikad nece pokoriti” i “Americka klavirska muzika naseg doba”. Ursula Oppens je trenutno John Evans odlikovani professor muzike na Northwestern University u Evanston-u, Illinois.

A native New Yorker, Ursula Oppens first studied piano with her mother, Edith Oppens, and continued with Leonard Shure and Guido Agosti. As an undergraduate at Radcliffe College, she studied English literature and economics, and received her Master's degree from the Juilliard School where she studied with Rosina Lhevinne and Felix Galimir. Ms. Oppens made her New York debut in 1970, and was awarded First Prize at the Busoni International Piano Competition that same year. She was the recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Grant which led directly to her debut with the New York Philharmonic. Throughout her career, an enduring commitment to integrating new music into more traditional concert programs has led Ms. Oppens to commission and premiere many new compositions. Among these are works by Anthony Davis, Elliott Carter, John Harbison, Tania Léon, György Ligeti, Witold Lutoslawski, Tobias Picker, Frederic Rzewski, Lois Vierk, and Charles Wuorinen. She is a co-founder of Speculum Musicae, a performing group which has pioneered new music since 1971. Ms. Oppens received Grammy nominations both for her recording of Rzewski's The People United Will Never Be Defeated and for "American Piano Music of Our Time.” Ursula Oppens currently holds the position of the John Evans Distinguished Professor of Music at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.
